The Double Cleansing Debate: Is It Really Necessary?

I’ll admit it—I used to think double cleansing was just another skincare trend designed to get me to buy more products. Surely one cleanser is enough? But as I experimented (and inevitably made some mistakes), I realised there’s a bit more to it.

So, is double cleansing really necessary, or is it just another overhyped step?

What Even Is Double Cleansing?

The idea is simple: two different cleansers, one after the other.

Step one: an oil-based cleanser to melt away sunscreen, makeup, and excess sebum.

Step two: a water-based cleanser to remove sweat, dirt, and anything else left behind.

The concept originally comes from Korean and Japanese skincare routines, where the goal is to cleanse thoroughly but gently. The key takeaway? It’s not about scrubbing your face twice as hard—it’s about using the right cleansers in the right way.

Do I Really Need to Double Cleanse?

It depends. Not everyone needs it every single day. But if you wear SPF daily (which, let’s be honest, you should be) or you wear makeup, double cleansing is probably worth considering.

I used to just use a gel cleanser and hope for the best. But I started noticing leftover mascara smudges under my eyes in the morning and a weird, not-quite-clean feeling on my skin. That’s when I gave double cleansing a proper try.

Here’s who might benefit from it:

✔️ If you wear sunscreen every day (again, you should be!)

✔️ If you wear makeup, especially foundation or waterproof mascara

✔️ If your skin feels congested, dull, or prone to breakouts

✔️ If you live in a city and are exposed to pollution

But if you have super dry or sensitive skin and don’t wear much on your face, a single gentle cleanse might be enough.

How to Double Cleanse Without Overdoing It

The biggest mistake I made when I first tried double cleansing? Using an oil cleanser and a super harsh foaming cleanser straight after. My skin did not thank me. The trick is to make sure both cleansers are gentle and suited to your skin type.

Step 1: Oil-Based Cleanser

  • Apply to dry skin and massage gently.
  • Add a little water so it emulsifies, then rinse.
  • No harsh rubbing—let the cleanser do the work!

Step 2: Water-Based Cleanser

  • Use something gentle that won’t strip your skin.
  • Massage onto damp skin and rinse with lukewarm water.
  • Avoid anything too foamy if you have dry or sensitive skin.

And that’s it! No need to be aggressive—just let the cleansers lift away all the day’s grime without irritating your skin barrier.

My Verdict

For me, double cleansing has made a noticeable difference. My skin looks clearer, and I don’t get that annoying “film” of leftover makeup or SPF. But I also don’t feel the need to do it every single night—sometimes, a single cleanse is enough.

So if you’ve been struggling with breakouts, dullness, or just feel like your cleanser isn’t cutting it, it might be worth a try! And if you’re already a double cleansing convert, let me know—what’s your favourite oil cleanser?
